Kika and Anung

Kika and Anungla are “missionaries” to refugee populations in Dallas.  Though they are from India, they are working with people whose lives would be in danger in their homelands of Asia and Africa.

Each week they visit the three main areas of Dallas with high concentrations of refugees.  Already they are working in 12 different apartment complexes.

Material items and volunteer opportunities that would help their ministry include:

Refreshments are an important relationship building time after each group meeting.”

  • Cookies – Small roundish cinnamon type from Fiesta.  Often come in a bag from the bakery area.  (They are similar to what they eat in their home country.)
  • Sugar for the very sweet tea they make.
  • Assam tea leaves – from India.
  • Or funds/gift cards to buy the above.

Foods that refugees can use include

  • Red lentils
  • White rice
  • Fresh produce including: tomatoes, onions, spinach, mustard greens, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, ginger, and fruits
  • NOT canned goods (These are completely unfamiliar to them.)

Cooking/Dining needs

  • Pots and pans
  • Cooking utensils and knives
  • Sets of cups/glasses
  • Plates
  • NOT silverware! (Most of these cultures eat with their hands.)

Diapers have been used by to build many Gospel friendships!

  • All sizes good, but…
  • Sizes 0 to 4 best.

Clothing

  • Children and adult clothing is welcomed!
  • Most forms of American clothing are usable.
  • Nothing too short or too sheer, though.  Modest only.
  • Not extra-large sizes.
  • T-shirts and jeans are good.
  • New packages of underwear.
  • Long African-type robes are also used.

Furniture

  • Anything not broken including beds and chairs

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Almost any time or skill you would like to offer can be used in some way that would benefit God’s work among refugees.
  • Specifically, a person or small group willing to help a gathering of 4-8 refugees for one hour per week is also very welcome.  The time will be primarily talking with them about very simple living skills or English words.  There will be an interpreter.  And Anung will show you how easy but meaningful it is!
  • One time visits from individuals or groups can also be helpful.
